Sarcoidosis Answers for Physicians, Nurses and Patients

Here at SarcInfo, between 2002 and 2004, we identified the cause of Sarcoidosis, and successfully trialled a curative antimicrobial therapy. During 2005 and 2006 the US FDA designated the antibiotics Clindamycin and Minocycline as Orphan Products in the treatment of Sarcoidosis, and studies are ongoing elsewhere.

For information about this breakthrough, please post your questions at the current study-site, or the Autoimmunity Research Foundation.

This archive of the historic study is maintained by volunteers from the Foundation. The material here provides useful background, but much of it is now out-of-date.

 insurance coverage - USA
Author: David Swift (---.in-addr.btopenworld.com)

I have been diagnosed with non acute sarcoid in the lungs. I’m presently on 5mg of prednisolone a day and my quality of life is pretty good.

I plan on returning to the USA to look after my mother in the near future but I’m concerned about health coverage as I have a pre existing condition, sarcoidosis. Has anyone had a similar experience and or thoughts on what I might be up against?

Many thanks.

David,

You are doing the best thing: planning ahead for the change. Insurance is generally regulated by each individual state. There are many factors to consider, such as what type of insurance (group or individual plan) you have now and what type you are planning to have when you move. Much of the insurance coverage in the USA is obtained as a group plan through employers. Will you be covered through a group plan with your employer? Will you be covered through your spouse's employer's group plan?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 is a federal law which provides some protection to people with chronic illness in some cases where they must change insurance coverage. I have no idea if this law might apply in your situation, but the HIPPA site at http://www.hcfa.gov/medicaid/hipaa/content/cons.asp may provide answers for some of your questions.

Take good care of yourself,
Belinda

David,
You are doing the best thing about planning ahead. In Michigan, most are insured through their employers and plans vary a great deal. Some plans will not cover a pre-existing illness while others will cover the illness as long as it hasn't been active for 90 days or more. The best bet is to check with the individual plan. I can tell you for sure that ALL the plans are different.

David,
The plan that I am in did not cover pre-existing conditions for the first 90 days. There really are a variety - as long as you have an employer. If you or your spouse do not have an employer with health coverage, then things could get pretty rough.

Sarcoidosis is regarded as a non-insurable condition by Blue Cross, one of the biggest insurers in America. You can only be covered if you are under a (employment) group plan.

I live in Minnesota and have a medical savings plan. I tried to change to a regular policy and no one wants to take me. My husband and I also signed up for a long term care plan (like nursing home insurance) and they turned me down. Actually, I am quite a bit healthier than the lady selling us the insurance. I have no Sarcoidosis symptoms and have had perfect checkups for 2 years.
