Belinda,
What a wonderfully written article, and what a wonderful doctor.
This article sets out the qualities a sarc patient needs in a doctor
1. He/she doesn't have to be an expert, in fact experts usually don't ask for help
2. He/she needs to aks for help. Needs to consult books and search the Internet.
3. He/she needs to have energy to spare
4. He/she needs to have an enquiring mind
5. He/she wants desperately to win, and not be beaten by the difficulty of a diagnosis/treatment
I have known just a few doctors that fit this profile. They were all young interns, still trying to make their mark (some were my colleagues...).
I think this article should serve as a wake-up call to sarc patients, who so often tend to focus on the larger centers rather than look for the problem-solving-doctor. The larger centers will treat the disease as they always have. The problem solver (who may well be working in a larger center will actually try to fix the problem...
I can't help but be reminded about the pathologists that Ken and Pages found who actually did an excellent detailed analysis of their biopsy slides, trying to understand exactly what agents were present in the granuloma...
Does anybody else care to add any selection qualities?
..Trevor..
