Sarcoidosis Answers for Physicians, Nurses and Patients

Here at SarcInfo, between 2002 and 2004, we identified the cause of Sarcoidosis, and successfully trialled a curative antimicrobial therapy. During 2005 and 2006 the US FDA designated the antibiotics Clindamycin and Minocycline as Orphan Products in the treatment of Sarcoidosis, and studies are ongoing elsewhere.

For information about this breakthrough, please post your questions at the current study-sites of the Autoimmunity Research Foundation.

This archive of the historic study is maintained by volunteers from the Foundation. The material here provides useful background, but most of this site is now out-of-date.

 Sarcoid of the colon?
Author: Kas (---.cpe.net.cable.roger)

My 24 year old niece in Australia was diagnosed with colon cancer last week. She has celiac disease, but following a strict diet, it was no problem. Nine months after the celiac dx, she started losing weight, was very tired and then passed blood in her stool. A colonoscopy revealed a bleeding tumor, which had already penetrated the bowel wall and attached to pelvic tissue. She had a massive 7 hour surgery done this week, and now the surgeon is saying that the pelvic sample looks like 'something he has not seen before". One swollen lymph node was also removed and has been sent to pathology, too,

Now, no - one in our family has ever had cancer, although both parents on her father's side succumbed to it. My sister forgot to mention to the surgeon that I have sarcoidosis when a history was taken, as they were in such a state over the cancer dx , as you can imagine.

My question is whether this pelvic tissue sample could be sarcoid ( and will they know how to look for it?) and does sarcoid co -exist with colon cancer?
I lost my spleen three years back because the docs at the Cleveland Clinic were pretty sure I had lymphoma, and they were wrong.

I have never heard of colon sarc, and wonder if it can present in the same manner as cancer, although I presume that the biopsy of the tumor must have been conclusive.

I told my sister that I would be asking you, as I consider you to be the most knowledgable folk about matters sarcoid.

Dx sarc 2003 by splenectomy. Also in lungs, chest lymph nodes, raised liver enzymes ( intermittent), leg muscle pain and sometime ankle swelling/burning. Well with high energy levels and normal PFT's Able to exercise and work at this point.

Kas,

An association between celiac disease and sarcoidosis was noted more than 20 years ago.

You are already aware that sarcoidosis is often misdiagnosed. Sarcoidosis can affect any organ, including the abdominal organs and gastrointestinal tract. You will find here is an article that may help you, since it reviews manifestations of sarcoidosis in various organs.

You will want to read the thread about Cancer from the marshallprotocol.com site which touches on the similarities between cancer and sarcoidosis and the difficulties distinguishing the two.

We don't know whether they will know how to "look for it." It's possible medicine might err on the side of caution, and assume it's better to consider something a cancer rather than "miss it." There's always the option of a second opinion and you could share with your family Which diagnostic tests do I need?

Thanks so much, Belinda. I will pass the information onto the family.

Kas,

You may also want to read the posts on the old thread Cancer Diagnosis in Sarcoid Patients.
